Fantasy Foolishness

Don't worry, I'm not going to subject you to my fantasy baseball angst. I'm doing fine, thanks. But I do want to expose some of my stupidity that comes from collecting players I own combined with my  'obsessive/compulsive collecting disorder'..... OCCD if you will.

Once I pick up a player my singular goal is to get a card of him into the binder. This has led to some overspending in the past. Here is the most egregious example:

I drafted Ryu when he was just a twinkle in Don Mattingly's eye. The only card he had at that point (at least the only one available online) was this Korean one so naturally I bought it. I wasn't quite $10, but it was close. Soon afterwards there were any number of mainstream cards of him available on COMC for 47 cents.

Here are two more examples:

Both of these cards were among the few available when I grabbed these guys for my team and both were sort of pricey. I little bit of patience would have saved me some money.

The corollary to all this is my other 'obsession'.....I want the card of a player in my binder to reflect the team the player is with when I have him rostered. Which means I knew I'd be replacing these cards eventually anyway. And yet I still over-spent. Is there any hope at all for me?

That second need, to have a representative card of a player, is my next post.

  1. I could never do this. I cycle through players off the waiver wire far too fast for my own good.

Then again, perhaps I should try to do this so that I'd stop cycling through the waiver wire so much!

    1. Yup, at least half the guys I pick up are gone well before their card arrives. That's especially true if I save up some 'needs' and order a group from COMC. By the time I get the card I forget I had the guy. Actually waiting to order several players at once from that place is a nice sign that my 12 Step program is working.

  2. At least you still end up with a few cool cards! I did this a few times where I compulsively needed cards of big foreign imports Kosuke Fukudome and Kyuji Fujikawa for my Cubs All Time Roster Collection and just could not wait. After dropping about as much as you did for Ryu, Topps started printing off their cards like crazy. They say patience is a virtue, I guess.

  3. That's a cool card of Ryu... Not $10 worth of cool, but it's still a neat card to have.

  4. What don't you like about fantasy sports? Have you ever tried any websites? If you are willing to try some, you should read through this beginner's guide and maybe head over to some websites and give them a shot ;)

    1. Oh, quote the contrary. I've run my football league for 36 years now. I can only find one older league in the country ( by one year). I've done NASCAR and golf leagues in the past. It's fantasy baseball that gives me fits. It's too much like having a second job. I've tried it twice in the past and swore 'never again ' but I got an offer I couldn't refuse this year...the league was a guy short and up against the draft so they fronted my the $200. I'm actually doing pretty well. I'm in fourth, with a huge lead over the seventh and below teams so I'll make the playoffs. My gripe is with my own compulsive behavior. I just HAVE to find a card of whatever player I pick up as soon as possible. That was the point of my rant.
