Astrodome Postcards

I'm not sure where these postcards came from but they bring back some fond memories of great events. The top one was taken during the first game played there in April 1965. The person who wrote the blurb on the back was either not using tier glasses or looking at a different photo. Check it out:

First of all, it seems odd to mention the time the game started at all. Clock clearly shows 7:46

This sure looks like the lineup card/ground rules meeting.

But whatever. It's a neat card.

This one is closer to my heart. It from the October, 1970 Houston Cougar football game versus Alabama. The Coogs lost with me somewhere over in the stands on the left, the student section. But the Coogs went on to an 8-3 record and a Top Twenty finish. A couple of years later I would watch games from the press level. That was fun. But the view you see right here is the one I had for years as a young alum. This was my group's favorite spot. It gave us a perfect view of Coach Bill Yeoman's veer offense.  It was up here where I also watched the basketball Game of The Century. This one brings back some great memories.

  1. The fact that you were there at the Houston vs. Alabama game makes that one heck of a collectible. I've been wanting to start collecting sports post cards... but haven't come across any at my local flea markets. One of these days though...

  3. The first postcard came from me; I got it at my postcard show last fall. While I normally would shy away from a card that's been "used", I thought it was appropriate that it had a presidential postage stamp on it. :-D

I can't take credit for the second one, but I love the angle of the photo, and I love love love the old school goalposts!

    1. Well, there it is. I really should keep records of what comes in from whom. I hope I thanked you. LOL My postcards are organized in a big binder now, a project that was long overdue!

    2. And now that I think about it...there is a LaGrange TX postmark on it so it's crazy that it would come to me from VA.

  4. Sports post cards are tremendous. Oversized baseball cards. I have a bunch of Dodgers ones.

  5. Those are wonderful! I don't like indoor baseball but the Astrodome roof, especially when lit, looks fantastic in photos.
