Johnny Unitas

Today John Constantine Unitas, the greatest football player to ever take the field, would have been 80. He was my hero. I loved watching him play.

I was fortunate enough to have seen him play in person here in Houston. I'll never forget that day in October of 1970 when his TD pass to Roy Jefferson won the game against the Oilers. Johnny U. threw the pass and turned to jog off the field. He knew how the play would end.

  1. I was only a year old when Unitas played his last game, but there's a small chance that I went to the 49ers/Colts game on 11/12/72. My parents were season ticket holders for the 49ers and although I don't remember them, I attended a lot of games as a baby.

Oh wait... just checked the box score. It looks like he didn't play in that game.

  2. One of my regrets is not going to a Colt game in Baltimore when I had the chance.

    1. That, my friend, would have been any true football fan's dream. At this point, I'd settle for owning a rookie card or an autographed card of him. Btw... those vintage cards you have are amazing. The only vintage Unitas I own is a well worn 1972 Topps... but it's one of my favorite cards in my vintage football binder.
