I opened four boxes from the upper shelves and had a lot of fun. Absolutely the best thing in any of my boxes was this Hank Aaron foldout I got the night he hit homer #712 in the Astrodome in September of 1973.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a class="hoverZoomLink" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_sI8iDAlAXGM64Nda8I0gGUjystp6dGtY1rES-E4jqVyOBQetdnDSqHj_0zKTcKhijgQZLLBjfdQ0x46bsJ8tTDri8g0Ek9GTw6FDMOeSF0I98jPzeTAuc4mcnggmSLzRZ3JR-Pu50U/s2628/IMG_0001+%25282%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="hoverZoomLink" data-original-height="2628" data-original-width="1197" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_sI8iDAlAXGM64Nda8I0gGUjystp6dGtY1rES-E4jqVyOBQetdnDSqHj_0zKTcKhijgQZLLBjfdQ0x46bsJ8tTDri8g0Ek9GTw6FDMOeSF0I98jPzeTAuc4mcnggmSLzRZ3JR-Pu50U/w292-h640/IMG_0001+%25282%2529.jpg" width="292" /></a></div><p></p><p>It opened up to a full four page home run log. Blame it on my quirky wants, blame it on the explosion of interest in shiny stuff, blame it on the pandemic. But whatever is to blame, it felt weird. </p><p>Coming home empty handed really was the result of all of the above excuses. I don't have much on my want-lists that dealers carry to small shows in the best of times.... '67 High Number SPs, '62 Post Cereal, '75 Topps Minis, and an admittedly odd selection of non-sport sets. The tables yesterday reflected the current trends in collecting. There were plenty of boxes of what I suppose are the kinds of cards people are in line for at Target these days. Display cases were generally filled with 'hits'. <br /></p><p>Daryll, the promoter and my friend, did a great job with the show, the first hotel show since last year. COVID protocols were in place and enforced. I should note here that my wife, my mother-in-law, and myself are all fully vaccinated. If not for that I likely wouldn't have gone at all. </p><p>He cut back on tables to give plenty of room for social distancing. But some of that is the reason for my striking out. With fewer tables the dealers cut back on what they brought. I normally spend at least 75% of my time at the hotel shows at Daryll's own tables since he usually has tons of vintage stuff. But he's limited what he brings and only sets up a few tables to give more to the dealers. After all, it's table rentals that pay for the room.</p><p>I struck out card-wise but getting to chat with Daryll for a bit made the trip worthwhile. And it was nice to get out of the house for a bit. I stopped at a few stores on the way home and bought binders and other hobby supplies so that made the trip worthwhile. </p><p>Meanwhile, I have a few things that were picked up in my latest SportsLots binge and an eBay buy or two. The '62 Post Cereal McCovey up top brought me to just five remaining. There are also some variations out there which I don't plan to chase. If they fall into my lap I'd take them of course. I also added Juan Marichal. His card is a bit pricey but after a day or so of combing through eBay looking at '67 Topps SPs like the Rod Carew rookie, it doesn't seem so expensive. And it really is as nice as the scan shows. That level of condition is rare for a set that was generally cut from the backs of boxes by 10-year-olds with dull scissors.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a class="hoverZoomLink" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKyWkApkhmkgJk0l3givA8U8slcRrvpxKs6dIcBHRlfmOyQEhGyGj8cKvsJSHZJBaL5go0t6PXz1ISWkodPgG9esTZ7IuTMXTczvIk9mO0s6ajsA7LH6hyCOjYgT_vbBsg_12Fi4NEDNw/s1036/IMG_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="hoverZoomLink" data-original-height="740" data-original-width="1036" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKyWkApkhmkgJk0l3givA8U8slcRrvpxKs6dIcBHRlfmOyQEhGyGj8cKvsJSHZJBaL5go0t6PXz1ISWkodPgG9esTZ7IuTMXTczvIk9mO0s6ajsA7LH6hyCOjYgT_vbBsg_12Fi4NEDNw/w400-h286/IMG_0002.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Over on Twitter a hobby friend showed a couple of cards from a set I was unaware of, the 1968 Topps/Milton Bradley Hot Rods. I found a dozen or so being sold by an eBay dealer so I'm at 16 or so. Finding them, not cost, is the challenge. That's a much more enjoyable hobby predicament than wondering if nabbing the remaining 26 Topps 67s will take my whole stimulus check. </p><p>There are some back color variations. The story behind these is a bit murky (I've read a couple of conflicting accounts) but I'm not going to worry about any of that. They will make a nice companion to the World On Wheels binder. <br /></p><p></p><div id="hzImg" style="background-color: white; border-radius: 4px; border: 4px solid rgb(255, 255, 255); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4) 0px 1px 3px; cursor: pointer; display: none; height: auto; left: 5px; line-height: 0px; margin: 4px; opacity: 1; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; pointer-events: none; position: absolute; top: 1434px; visibility: visible; width: auto; z-index: 2147483647;"></div>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-32867982142996193602021-03-16T12:04:00.002-05:002021-03-16T12:05:05.550-05:001975 Topps Minis are Cute<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a class="hoverZoomLink" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimATqCyDn4weI7IGSopSFEW3vIToyXZtEPMYxeZdvOOJXckMr2dSbFejrjhcmWE3R8c1ldpKP0goi5utUsddikoPv6Au6g8xIM5m9qXyq6Tqz_cyyH16Y3MWpXPpJNBpc_AszQPuV1Lnw/s2048/IMG.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="hoverZoomLink" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1582" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimATqCyDn4weI7IGSopSFEW3vIToyXZtEPMYxeZdvOOJXckMr2dSbFejrjhcmWE3R8c1ldpKP0goi5utUsddikoPv6Au6g8xIM5m9qXyq6Tqz_cyyH16Y3MWpXPpJNBpc_AszQPuV1Lnw/w494-h640/IMG.png" width="494" /></a></div><p></p><p>I've been putting together the '75 Topps Mini set pretty casually for quite a while now. I finished the regular set a few years back and had a small stack of the more diminutive alternatives that came in a 'mixed lot/starter lot' I'd purchased. I also had most of the Orioles from long ago. I'm glad I have this one to play with since my '67 set build is stalled due to the silly prices that have been reached in the vintage market. When I get frustrated with folks asking $80 for a battered '67 7th Series SP I can go to SportsLots and toss a half dozen of these in my cart for about fifty cents each. <br /></p><p>I've had fun with this as I have picked up the vast majority of what I have in the binder through good old trading. I've swapped dupes with Twitter and blogging friends, old and new. I've been sent some substantial packages in the mail in exchange for my sending dupes from other sets which is satisfying. I always end up with a healthy amount of dupes from most of my set builds because I have a habit of just grabbing lots and hoping for the best. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. </p><p>Which reminds me...if you're building the '74 Topps set, get in touch. I can hook you up!</p><p>I don't have a lot of completed pages in my '75 Mini binder. The page I posted above is a pretty good one. It has a Hall of Famer, some solid players, some interesting players and a PC guy (Bob Moose). there's also a favorite Oriole of mine, some terrible airbrusing, and a nice cross secetion of card photo styles, posed, action, head shots, etc. </p><p>It's also nicely representative of the colors the set uses. I've noticed that some of the pages in the back of the binder seen to be dominated by the orange/brown combo cards. Maybe that's just happenstance but it's definitely true at this point for me. </p><p>If you have any dupes for this thing you're looking to offload please check out my wantlist over on the right. As i said, I have lots of stuff from 60s and 70s Topps sets I can trade. <br /></p><div id="hzImg" style="background-color: white; border-radius: 4px; border: 4px solid rgb(255, 255, 255); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4) 0px 1px 3px; cursor: pointer; display: none; height: auto; left: 111px; line-height: 0px; margin: 4px; opacity: 1; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; pointer-events: none; position: absolute; top: 5px; visibility: visible; width: auto; z-index: 2147483647;"></div>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-17570870163366823102021-02-25T18:55:00.000-06:002021-02-25T18:55:09.407-06:00Sprinking In Some Sigs<p> I recently picked up a small group of signed cards form the Topps 1959 and 1960 sets. I'm not an autograph guy particularly but adding a few to my sets is a nice bit of 'gravy'. What's more, these were in really nice condition so most served as upgrades as well. </p><p><span style="font-size: large;">The '59s...</span></p><p></p><p>Walt 'Moose' Moryn, whose <a href="https://59toppsblog.blogspot.com/2013/07/488-walt-moryn.html" target="_blank">'59 card blog post is here</a>, was a fun-loving guy and a popular teammate. I included this from his SABR bio in that '59 blog post and seems worthy of being re-printed:</p><p><br /></p><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i><span style="font-family: inherit;">Among those who remembered Moose was
Cardwell, whose no-hitter was nearly overshadowed by the drama of the
game-saving catch. “He made me famous,” Cardwell told Jerome Holtzman
for an obituary in the Chicago Tribune. “After I threw the pitch, I was leaning down with him and saying, ‘C’mon, Moose, make the catch.’</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">“He
was a good man, a ballplayer’s ballplayer. After the game I told him,
‘Moose, I owe you a beer.’ And he said ‘I’ll take you up on it.’ He
enjoyed life. And he enjoyed people. He always drew the biggest crowd.”</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Another
Cubs teammate was fellow St. Paul native Jerry Kindall, who was just 21
when he first arrived in Chicago fresh from the University of
Minnesota. Kindall told Holtzman about his first encounter with the
Moose. “I walked into the clubhouse and there was Walt,” Kindall said.
“He was wonderful to me. He shepherded me around. He gave the appearance

reliever." Famous for wearing "Coke-bottle glasses" and throwing his
first warm-up pitch to the backstop, Duren threw as hard as anybody in
the game. In 1958, his first full season with the Yankees, Duren struck
out 87 hitters in 76 innings and led the American League with 20 saves.
In his second season with the Yankees, Duren struck out 96 hitters in 77
innings.</i><p><i>
How hard did Duren throw? Nobody used radar guns in those days, but
Duren once told interviewer Dom Forker, "Anyway, I don't know how fast I
threw, but I do know that Mantle told me I was the fastest he ever saw.
And Tony Kubek said I threw harder than Nolan Ryan."</i></p></span></blockquote><p></p>The alcoholism that hampered his career became others' salvation as Duren became a counselor later in life. <p></p><p>There was also a 1994(?) Topps Archives faux '54 signed Klippstein in the mix but I didn't scan it. I didn't follow the Topps Project 2020 thing very closely but I'm somehow back on their mailing list and this one caught my eye. I love that it's not the same old pose of Jack Roosevelt Robinson and besides that, it's pretty sharp. I didn't notice that there is some sort of 'gem' embedded in the thing to the left of the name box. I guess it makes sense given the card was designed by someone named Ben Baller who is, among other things according to the blurb on the back, a 'world-renowned jeweler'. <p></p><p></p><p>It sat on my desk because anything in a case is a pain to scan and I don't like posting phone pix, but here we are. I'm hunkered down in Houston awaiting tonight's record low temp and feeling lucky that our power is still on. Figured I'd put my time to good use.<br /></p><p>I've also been meaning to mention that, from the looks of the comments on my 'Paid Too Much' post, I'm not alone in being dismayed/bemused/confused by the state of the hobby right now. And if you don't think the hobby is wacky, <a href="https://sports.ha.com/itm/2020-zion-williamson-nba-top-shot-rookie-debut-series-1-1-192/a/50038-81077.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515" target="_blank">check this out at the Heritage Auction site</a>. Apparently, for the low price of $35K (!!!) you can own a piece of a video replay of a basketball two pointer. I'll be damned if I can make sense of the whole thing but there it is. And heritage is no fly-by-night outfit. They are a big player in the memorabilia business. <br /></p><p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a class="hoverZoomLink" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlH6fbmOiUpL8OR647NG0eS3PY7yZZiX3lM37hA9jhUEVNkeZtEIuqKCIH9s7Ki1WiKpyWy1gcLwfoDM6U6_ww1kuCAZJeyoAeflHb9WRusfnyv8nJptMK5UXzhoTv1fIjXuUqj9SHr4g/s2013/IMG_7060.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="hoverZoomLink" data-original-height="2013" data-original-width="1385" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlH6fbmOiUpL8OR647NG0eS3PY7yZZiX3lM37hA9jhUEVNkeZtEIuqKCIH9s7Ki1WiKpyWy1gcLwfoDM6U6_ww1kuCAZJeyoAeflHb9WRusfnyv8nJptMK5UXzhoTv1fIjXuUqj9SHr4g/w275-h400/IMG_7060.png" width="275" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><div id="hzImg" style="background-color: white; border-radius: 4px; border: 4px solid rgb(255, 255, 255); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4) 0px 1px 3px; cursor: pointer; display: none; height: auto; left: 163px; line-height: 0px; margin: 4px; opacity: 1; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; pointer-events: none; position: absolute; top: 5px; visibility: visible; width: auto; z-index: 2147483647;"></div>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-75058901362415898952021-02-05T08:00:00.001-06:002021-02-05T08:00:02.996-06:00Paying Too Much<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaJ8ANOwq4z7RxIKIGynXqsjky5Zhk0-uUXN-R7tUvTR88KCkseWhbX7nS-Qut316L4LyFZe25jAso3JkoLF9KL4BNUkN-UCmWk3Zo5a0eavmJJ7WIDqSnRnnKT6S5KfC6fpsTwaiykew/s1089/IMG_0001a.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="765" data-original-width="1089" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaJ8ANOwq4z7RxIKIGynXqsjky5Zhk0-uUXN-R7tUvTR88KCkseWhbX7nS-Qut316L4LyFZe25jAso3JkoLF9KL4BNUkN-UCmWk3Zo5a0eavmJJ7WIDqSnRnnKT6S5KfC6fpsTwaiykew/w400-h281/IMG_0001a.png" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>I'm the last guy who should be weighing in on the current state of the hobby but since when has that stopped me from opening my mouth? I see tweets and read blogs about guys sitting in lines for hours, not for COVID vaccines, but to buy boxes of cards at Target. I'm guessing they are trying to hit it big on shiny stuff. </p><p>I used to buy a pack here and there, baseball and football mostly, just
to see what the companies were up to. Then I stopped seeing anything on
the shelves. One thing leads to another and card prices are way above where they were just a year or so ago. Where this leaves the hobby, how it affects kids trying to collect...I don't know. I have opinions but as someone who doesn't care about new cards my opinions aren't worth much. <br /></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>What <i>does</i> mean something to me is that the 'bubble' has tricked down and elevated the prices on almost everything. Pre-War cards shot up and not long after I noticed the prices of the cards that interest me, mid-50s thru late 70s stuff, followed the upward trend. I saw it in the cost of the 1967 Topps high numbers I am lacking. Run-of-the-mill raw cards in that group went from about $15/$18 to $27/$35, sometimes much higher, for anything better than VG-EX. I wish I had been more aggressive when I began the set because now, unless I get lucky with a bid group, I grab anything under $25 that doesn't have a chunk missing. </p><p>Even the prices for 1962 Post Cereal cards, those that were 'short printed' (issued on the backs of unpopular cereals) have risen quite a bit. It kills my soul to spend big bucks on cards that appear to have been sliced off the boxes by seven-year-olds with a butter knife. But I'm too close on this set (and the '67T) to turn back or abandon the build. So here we are.</p><p>For the Post set I'm long done with the easy cards. Most of those are still available for
79 cents to a few dollars. But the ones in this post were somewhat
tougher. That's why I was okay with paying for the Jerry Lynch card up
top even with the penciled-in team change. Lynch, btw, was traded from
the Reds to the Pirates in May of 1963. So either the box was on the
shelf awhile or some kid liked updating his cards. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg34D8Iudasrax_7HgssmE9_ZrVRRQ754ss6vQVLD9ra3ByNBWwl4tDeQsWRGqev2g9B4N8zcDpiTAK9bCXdtIH6QNU0t8_gL3QBUQKeCULiuq2tXVoTZH5S0A5NHdB0d1gGKRH0M0MB8g/s1081/IMG_0002.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="788" data-original-width="1081" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg34D8Iudasrax_7HgssmE9_ZrVRRQ754ss6vQVLD9ra3ByNBWwl4tDeQsWRGqev2g9B4N8zcDpiTAK9bCXdtIH6QNU0t8_gL3QBUQKeCULiuq2tXVoTZH5S0A5NHdB0d1gGKRH0M0MB8g/w400-h291/IMG_0002.png" width="400" /></a></div><p>This Joe Amalfitano card was, believe it or not, the better of the two available on SportsLots. LOL It's <strike>hard</strike> impossible to read but the card has a notation that he had been drafted by the Houston Colts. <br /></p><p></p><p></p><p>Marty Keough had a younger brother and a son who played big league ball. I'd forgotten about it and until now I didn't even have it on my Hawkins checklist. Sugar Daddy candy 'pops' were pretty popular when I was a kid. I'm sure they are still around. The elongated shape of Sugar Daddys led to the small size of the card (illustrated below) and odd shape.<br /></p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglzf52q3Vt2MCS1BcDw06dx9kGV5bQ2Ld6gPxKprhIx5hMH8JyBoH-7_RyfGdQOFCW5UvNXXrACyJmhrM-kjnlLvtPpmbi9EjEIVCtcYcP-HYpm3E9BE3XjlUXJX3KviyvjD-WO_wbGVo/s818/IMG_0001.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="818" data-original-width="325" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglzf52q3Vt2MCS1BcDw06dx9kGV5bQ2Ld6gPxKprhIx5hMH8JyBoH-7_RyfGdQOFCW5UvNXXrACyJmhrM-kjnlLvtPpmbi9EjEIVCtcYcP-HYpm3E9BE3XjlUXJX3KviyvjD-WO_wbGVo/w159-h400/IMG_0001.png" width="159" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This little card comes from the second of four mid-70s issues from
Nabisco/Sugar Daddy. The first two sets were multi-sport and had 25 guys
in each. Hawkins is included in both of the first two series but the two checklists (again, look below) had a lot of overlap but were not exactly the same. They were both laid out with football players as the first cards, followed by hockey and then hoops. oddly, there is a lone stray hockey guy in the middle of the basketball players in both. <a href="https://sportscollectorsdigest.com/cards/sticking-with-it-1974-75-sugar-daddy-cards" target="_blank">This article from SCD</a> in 2015 has a lot more info on these. <br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another quirk, which I can't explain, is that the sets are listed as being from 1974 and 1975. something called Sugar Mama Pops. I don't remember them but apparently
they were the chocolate-coated version. I found a label and a photo of

As you might expect it features all the members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as of the issue date.</p><p>The logo on the front is a bit hard to make out but it signifies that 1988 was the Hall's 25th Anniversary. There are 144 cards in the set. Here's that logo.<br /></p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduw2r62p3yd2tMsNnAXcEX-ePwnHTzXqHQg9Nahyphenhyphenk6GMQZzc5jaso7U24iiaDLDfexH5Am8cugiKoAGtnssGzOPKhcvU87yjQEJ1TsNl93vG2DBk5VlWh5ZGtTepJnKRKOeLgApKXvp4/s275/IMG_0009b.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduw2r62p3yd2tMsNnAXcEX-ePwnHTzXqHQg9Nahyphenhyphenk6GMQZzc5jaso7U24iiaDLDfexH5Am8cugiKoAGtnssGzOPKhcvU87yjQEJ1TsNl93vG2DBk5VlWh5ZGtTepJnKRKOeLgApKXvp4/s0/IMG_0009b.jpg" /></a></div><p></p><p>Swell Gum was a brand name under the Philly Gum umbrella and Philly Gum is lasted (it's very hard to see) on the back of the cards.</p><p>The checklist is quirky in that it starts off with the five 1985 Hall inductees. That group included Joe Willie Namath, O. J. Simpson, and Pete Rozelle. 1985 was three years prior to the set being issued. The newest inductee class (1988) is at the end. It's as if the set was put together in '85 with the newest members featured but not issured for three years. In between the '85 and '88 groups the rest of the Hall members are in alphabetical order..sort of. Some cards are 'out of place' in the alphabetical lineup...Dick Butkus and Willie Brown landed in behind the inductees with 'C' names and others are scrambled as well. </p><p>The cards themselves have a decent design. The Hall logo takes up too much space but it doesn't deter from the cards much. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjv4xu-ZilLCHV9T6a1O842JtU0yvL3EcFGhSEIbamP2yzsajNEPeE5S5WQv99ODhLC7J4ngp04u49kzQX93fJCXatFyX5V74xSXFwnad4_cCJjcFYR27PY7M5IfTwA7kbXlWcMbRBQ1U/s1044/IMG_0003.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1044" data-original-width="740" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjv4xu-ZilLCHV9T6a1O842JtU0yvL3EcFGhSEIbamP2yzsajNEPeE5S5WQv99ODhLC7J4ngp04u49kzQX93fJCXatFyX5V74xSXFwnad4_cCJjcFYR27PY7M5IfTwA7kbXlWcMbRBQ1U/w284-h400/IMG_0003.jpg" width="284" /></a></div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXxJ6CBm6BJ5CT9uKPIHQrdSPeuAfu4qqbEjG_1StyyP3CHbOxOJqIqXUHPB2_F9ttWnj8n2hBM5qmWgKE9ldBsHRzwAXIDLJJFWYmBNTc19iiM_TquY3x7JpzjhyphenhyphenHCUQMedLONXiMEBI/s1040/IMG_0002.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="740" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXxJ6CBm6BJ5CT9uKPIHQrdSPeuAfu4qqbEjG_1StyyP3CHbOxOJqIqXUHPB2_F9ttWnj8n2hBM5qmWgKE9ldBsHRzwAXIDLJJFWYmBNTc19iiM_TquY3x7JpzjhyphenhyphenHCUQMedLONXiMEBI/w285-h400/IMG_0002.jpg" width="285" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqolPH_U9WgNd975uGBLb1lrtNoj4KfiAPdaX7ysV14EUduGNHpY6f8Lnus47gIvpFOQO8B4hWPDxjIUJzwIKwKVAetCZeIyzKaYn3JODHFd3UNCOVuYvikEt7HqYszwqHs2mBusmTrOI/s1040/IMG_0014.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="744" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqolPH_U9WgNd975uGBLb1lrtNoj4KfiAPdaX7ysV14EUduGNHpY6f8Lnus47gIvpFOQO8B4hWPDxjIUJzwIKwKVAetCZeIyzKaYn3JODHFd3UNCOVuYvikEt7HqYszwqHs2mBusmTrOI/w286-h400/IMG_0014.jpg" width="286" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Nothing wrong with the Jim Brown card. It was something prompted by a meeting between Johnson and my Uncle Gerard. The same sort of thing happened with Hall inductee Alex Wojciechowicz. One day in the mid 1980s I got a large envelope in the mail which contained a Pro Football Hall of Fame wall calendar. It had been sent by Alex Wojciechowicz who had become a customer at my Uncle's pharmacy. In it Wojciechowicz had written a bit about his career and some notes on other Hall members he'd played with and against in the 40s. What I remember most about it is that every he signed his full name to every comment. I'm sure i have the calendar among the stuff I packed away when I gave up my hobby room whn we needed space for a second nursery. I'll dig it out one of these days.<br /></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7F5iGCYwoHQJKcimOq7CrkNKGcUAZQzWlYjJvZesC7BarmZZEA7eYYEJd93RXvc5FSHEx_WVpuU9Gm0E1nvfmuIXwLyQa2DvYbPsLdAB2eQqHE8SqpAXp9nHQZFhXRSUcBsOvuToz_I/s1040/IMG_0015.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="745" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7F5iGCYwoHQJKcimOq7CrkNKGcUAZQzWlYjJvZesC7BarmZZEA7eYYEJd93RXvc5FSHEx_WVpuU9Gm0E1nvfmuIXwLyQa2DvYbPsLdAB2eQqHE8SqpAXp9nHQZFhXRSUcBsOvuToz_I/w286-h400/IMG_0015.jpg" width="286" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFTfR1G5VzNrnwXv2cQhYP2rCjYLs-ox92Vx4o7YHYSCmhZr3p43vr1_Q2na4ck200Kkm62Anvl8_VnqiZ7s53YQqPt11DZK01rufRC0NbvrjtHooNefkq__5x424Sva54-nGcDhtmIHA/s1040/IMG_0016.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="740" data-original-width="1040" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFTfR1G5VzNrnwXv2cQhYP2rCjYLs-ox92Vx4o7YHYSCmhZr3p43vr1_Q2na4ck200Kkm62Anvl8_VnqiZ7s53YQqPt11DZK01rufRC0NbvrjtHooNefkq__5x424Sva54-nGcDhtmIHA/w400-h285/IMG_0016.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><p>I'm a sucker for sideline cape pics so I'll finish with this one of Doug Atkins.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW46_ep6NdjCedwZxapCRjUTbqLKZSTCj__rYCF9vKFXhvxe9YQWKAcOkGS671eJTZGqtL9i2vY5BVzV9htbmcgvJ8rODhr4tmdIlSHASX0JjG90icpwTg4HiGtMPL9XihsnrjFu2aFeA/s1040/IMG_0018.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="736" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW46_ep6NdjCedwZxapCRjUTbqLKZSTCj__rYCF9vKFXhvxe9YQWKAcOkGS671eJTZGqtL9i2vY5BVzV9htbmcgvJ8rODhr4tmdIlSHASX0JjG90icpwTg4HiGtMPL9XihsnrjFu2aFeA/w283-h400/IMG_0018.jpg" width="283" /></a></div>Swell followed up this set with sets in 1989 and 1990. I've bought more there in the last few months than I have from eBay, SportsLots or anywhere else. In addition to some oddball football and baseball sets I paid a few bucks for this addition to my Frank Robinson collection. The unused postcard shows Frank and his staff as he was about to become MLB's first black manager. <br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is almost surely a photo from Spring Training in Tucson where the Indians trained from the late '40s through the early 1990s. On Frank's staff that first season were (l-r) Harvey Haddix, Dave Garcia, Tom McCraw, and Jeff Torborg . Looks like all five of them wore their stirrups as they had during their playing days. Frank had those long, thin ones going on. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I know a lot of folks look back wistfully at those Indians unis but I wasn't a fan, then or now. The Seaver/Denehy rookie is now the biggest hobby purchase I've ever made. By far.</p><p>Tom Seaver's death in 2020 forced a bump in the price of an already super expensive card. It was rather discouraging to look at the prices asked in auctions and on eBay. I gave a few thoughts to backing out of my pursuit of the set but I was really too far into it. I was past the point of no-return. I guess I could have sold off what I had put together but I'd have lost money on the graded cards I'd broken out of their holders and the work involved in selling cards just isn't something I find enticing.</p><p>Then something happened that changed my way of looking at the last leg of the chase. I won two of my fantasy football money leagues and was the runner-up in the third one. I had a pretty healthy PayPal balance a day or so after Christmas and it was back to eBay for me.</p><p>Over the last few months I'd made a few half-hearted attempts at some low-end Seavers but lost out on all of them. As I've done with all the expansive cards in my sets builds I kept my eyes out for graded cards I would accept and raw cards from very well established dealers I trust. Two targets popped up last week and I made an offer on one PSA 1.5 which was turned down and then on this one from a dealer I hadn't bought from before but who had 100% feedback with many, many thousands of sales. He counter-offered, I thought it over and bought it. The cost was a bit more than I had hoped to pay but still within reason. </p><p>The corners are decent, there's a scuff along the bottom edge a a stain on the back but considering the $1000+ examples I had been seeing I am more than happy with this one. It puts me at 40 high numbers away from the finish. That includes the spendy Carew rookie. But that one isn't as bad as the Seaver. </p><p>I'll get there. Finishing this thing and maybe my '62 Post set are my 2021 hobby goals. <br /></p><p><br /></p>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-46917550371012534482020-12-24T17:48:00.000-06:002020-12-24T17:48:29.486-06:00Stuff on my desk Pt 1<p>Not much new in the world of cards for me in the last few months. Been catching up on books I've been putting off, binge watching The West Wing on Netflix, picking up photos and some '67T high numbers and messing with the '62 Post cards and some Philly Gum sets. </p><p>I have a small stack of stuff that's sitting on my desk awaiting transfer to binders and boxes. Figured I'd scan a few because I had time on my hands after getting knocked out of my home league fantasy football playoffs. <br /></p><p>Here's a poorly cut Daryl Spencer. I have no problems with these being ragged. They were cut out by a lot of clumsy 10-year-olds like me in 1962. The photo seller's store I like to prowl through on eBay had a big promo running recently and I grabbed a bunch. Here are the two baseball news-wire shots I bought. Both Earl Weaver pics from 1969. Both are 101% Earl, too. For both pics I've enlarged the cutline for easier reading.<br /></p><p></p><p>In this one he's arguing with Larry Napp. It's over game three of the '69 Series play involving Jim Palmer and Bud Harrelson who had been caught in a rundown after being picked off first. The play (and the call) ended up being of little consequence. Unlike the <u>terribly</u> botched JC Martin debacle later in the Series. <br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUC0ZS_CBlSdgAGCd4pzReYDHNSKSlah1w4-x7ht9wfeRHfOLNyG6fj5Y75J0msllkqvgTbtNsiZXYpK5gngT15tDxo2E7lbs9oBJ8RwmbTmGeiy9xegZ_bzt4K4yPRKkduJwEt0ooCoc/s2048/IMG_0002.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1528" data-original-width="2048" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUC0ZS_CBlSdgAGCd4pzReYDHNSKSlah1w4-x7ht9wfeRHfOLNyG6fj5Y75J0msllkqvgTbtNsiZXYpK5gngT15tDxo2E7lbs9oBJ8RwmbTmGeiy9xegZ_bzt4K4yPRKkduJwEt0ooCoc/w640-h478/IMG_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6yrcWm8x7LpH56kExxqUYE6gevyWNpZMpvn_pwRKApin867J90XvTGDkwd5Fc9vx0GwZts8KGWsiEsj965JJNTSJ8k3juhJkuSA2uu9FNPbHlZM8Coyx0Yz77aoWKfGiGrysnHd2WjPs/s2078/IMG_0002dd.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="290" data-original-width="2078" height="90" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6yrcWm8x7LpH56kExxqUYE6gevyWNpZMpvn_pwRKApin867J90XvTGDkwd5Fc9vx0GwZts8KGWsiEsj965JJNTSJ8k3juhJkuSA2uu9FNPbHlZM8Coyx0Yz77aoWKfGiGrysnHd2WjPs/w640-h90/IMG_0002dd.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p>The second photo is Earl in a much different mood. NL players got the red trim although a few errors occurred where they had blue grid lines around their stats. I'm very likely to blow those variations off. No need to build a master set when I'm gonna collect these in 'over-excited-nine-year-old-cut-these-out' condition.<div><br /></div><div>The always underappreciated John Roseboro kicks this thing off. The Dodgers are the first team in the checklist for the Senior Circuit. The AL got the first hundred cards, the NL the next hundred in this 200 card set. Which reminds me...I was curious how Post decided the order of the teams in the checklist. They are aligned <i>close</i> to their 1961 finish, but not exactly. Obviously, the Dodgers didn't win the NL pennant in '61. The Reds did that and they are second in the checklist.</div><div><br /></div><div>I did a bit of digging and played a hunch. Sure enough, the teams were numbered in the order of the major league standing in early- to mid-August, 1961. Between August 7th and 13th, the teams' spots in the standings and checklists matched with the only exception being following the games on the 11th. So that's the week the set must have been planned. Worth noting is that there were 10 AL clubs and 8 NL clubs in 1961. Fans of the newly formed Mets and Colt .45s didn't have player cards to look for on their boxes of Grape-Nuts in 1962. On a positive note, the NL teams got more players per team.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_dI3HBFiaqZ2ulRRGvnXoEwSQWBdU62HJTRS7ORg9eVI7_cEXADfiN3myVT90PsrcZJpO5mhxHxJmnpJDv6iEsg82E8sQYSmO_N8xJrGD8KroOQQMTD00JJM4KpWpol2EBfMZrFgFjSc/s1044/IMG_0003.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="764" data-original-width="1044" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_dI3HBFiaqZ2ulRRGvnXoEwSQWBdU62HJTRS7ORg9eVI7_cEXADfiN3myVT90PsrcZJpO5mhxHxJmnpJDv6iEsg82E8sQYSmO_N8xJrGD8KroOQQMTD00JJM4KpWpol2EBfMZrFgFjSc/w400-h293/IMG_0003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Player success and popularity have a bearing on the cost of these things but scarcity is an even bigger factor. Some players were included on the backs of less popular cereal and so fewer of their cards were snipped from boxes and put into kids' collections. I happened upon a Net54 member looking to dump a nice, big starter set of 1962 Post Cereal cards at a bargain price. Right up my alley.</p><p>I had a lot of these back in the day. In '62 my siblings were just about the age where they would want cereal for breakfast and I, as a pre-teen, loved the stuff. (Honey Comb and Alpha bits were my favored Post offerings) Add in the fact that there was a family down the street with about six boys junior high age and younger, and there were plenty of these floating around my block.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiMo3aYAGn4iAWDBlSR9xAHuQ7Pwo_qxQoBhIV8R0uydSJrFGgPfQryN03g0qYUSfi7wS0Xto1WlwZnPOKILv5NaapyUhgAOlVYsXBsAVa0QZ2RuDb_7q6oKc9nKgqiSrGKGJvDLnFhg/s1028/IMG_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1028" height="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiMo3aYAGn4iAWDBlSR9xAHuQ7Pwo_qxQoBhIV8R0uydSJrFGgPfQryN03g0qYUSfi7wS0Xto1WlwZnPOKILv5NaapyUhgAOlVYsXBsAVa0QZ2RuDb_7q6oKc9nKgqiSrGKGJvDLnFhg/w400-h299/IMG_0003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>My goal here is just to collect the cards. I don't care at all whether or not they were cut straight, folded, or have kids' names written in the blank backs. Everything in this post came via eBay or Net54 buys. But not COMC which is where I've spent about 75% of my hobby money over the last few years. <br /></p><p>Four months after I requested shipping I got an email from COMC that they were packaging my order. That was two weeks ago, and nothing since. I've hated to criticize any business during this time but COMC had the time and resources to send multiple emails a day touting their latest auctions. Once I get this last order in hand I am requesting a transfer of the money I have there (and it's a lot) to be sent back to my PP account. </p><p>Enough of my bitching, let's look at cards. Yaz' signature look like a few I've seen from 90-year-old former players. Neat card though.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxZ6kuk72XJSFNN6ROw4qrf2sMingCCwG8ld4YboG8IB-R8iNCCJz3g_dFBs60nnH215Z6yZikbKxodnGBgFZgQxlddYoFf2bfnzcXNCXsy4OeSW7T8IF8hZ-s9IXY54wRlFiWL5WTXaQ/s1061/IMG_0006.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1061" data-original-width="755" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxZ6kuk72XJSFNN6ROw4qrf2sMingCCwG8ld4YboG8IB-R8iNCCJz3g_dFBs60nnH215Z6yZikbKxodnGBgFZgQxlddYoFf2bfnzcXNCXsy4OeSW7T8IF8hZ-s9IXY54wRlFiWL5WTXaQ/w285-h400/IMG_0006.jpg" width="285" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSHLVH-Uk-vIG2D4m8t132EuDBWwivR-gxIrMWVNDzxUBaNBXp00B-ESn9fAJzeLpFZEPTE6yMhyphenhyphenzVMRv6DXlXLmcKg9bh1gT9W8RjORP_gVuEsy-a30aJCLeY8d5rYNSJnhpg1-KXwWI/s363/IMG_0006b.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="311" data-original-width="363" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSHLVH-Uk-vIG2D4m8t132EuDBWwivR-gxIrMWVNDzxUBaNBXp00B-ESn9fAJzeLpFZEPTE6yMhyphenhyphenzVMRv6DXlXLmcKg9bh1gT9W8RjORP_gVuEsy-a30aJCLeY8d5rYNSJnhpg1-KXwWI/s320/IMG_0006b.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's a relatively young Pete Rose. And I don't mean online. I'm sort of a dinosaur in that I still like the feel of a book in my hands. I'd been looking at The Athletic website (100% worth the subscription cost, btw) and came across Joe Posnanski's series chronicling the Top 100 Players in baseball history, at least according to him. It was a wonderful distraction from the lack of a season in the spring and early summer.<br /></p><p> He did it as a countdown, and while there were plenty of arguments to be made about where he put certain players, there could be no argument that his essays were marvelously written. Just terrific stuff, day after day. If you are not familiar with Posnanski's work, you are missing out.</p><p>When he got down to the last ten it was really fun to speculate on who would reign as #1 (it was Willie Mays). But, as I said, every player's story was so well written. Many suggestions rolled in that he publish the entire list in book form. I'd pre-order that for sure.</p><p>Soon after the series finished I check and found that Posnanski had written a book about Buck O'Neil. Entitled The Soul of Baseball, it is a travelogue of sorts which follows the year Posnanski spent on the road with O'Neil as the 90-year-old Negro League vet did what he'd been doing most of his life, spreading the gospel of baseball in general, the Negro leagues in particular.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHgB5wnFgamN8XzdjtsP0AFWFkQ0LIr9pfZUHHPv4Qf2IoKzU0WCvlusDAystUnbQOIiVnOEqImtHCOkjPodXjtXxeqish8c6_RgVd2ZKE0SnigHNrROhHib4drXpq9nFTikjpSn2L6TM/s499/51v2aobgdZL._SX328_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="330" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHgB5wnFgamN8XzdjtsP0AFWFkQ0LIr9pfZUHHPv4Qf2IoKzU0WCvlusDAystUnbQOIiVnOEqImtHCOkjPodXjtXxeqish8c6_RgVd2ZKE0SnigHNrROhHib4drXpq9nFTikjpSn2L6TM/w265-h400/51v2aobgdZL._SX328_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" width="265" /></a></div><p></p><p>I wasn't sure what to expect but I was bowled over as I read it. Posnanski came to really love O'Neil as they met fans at minor league parks, at baseball gatherings and at funerals of Buck's former teammates and rivals. The book made me laugh and tear up. And it made me do something I don't think I've ever done before...I went back and immediately re-read it. Not every page, mind you, but I dug through to find some of the wonderful stories that the book held. Posnanski shone a light on a one-of-a-kind human. </p><p>Soon after I finished I shipped the book off to someone I know who will appreciate it. My guess is I won't get it back. But that's OK.</p><p>Then I went and found an authenticated signed pic of Buck O'Neil for my wall. As the book makes clear, Buck signed a lot of autographs. So many that I doubt anyone would bother to forge his signature. just no profit in it. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE-r-XGBEvc8ETkD57GMyspnO9CQg2p2bcZZJoenheE4KtifwgQgaca7AsFveA_qEEPQ_KGUazNwBrW7uZA8WMCTA9NyrFMz0i0W0T3-w2RGGiD30ZT-nmuuyoLO64VN1cXKrIAYcLQo8/s2048/IMG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1621" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE-r-XGBEvc8ETkD57GMyspnO9CQg2p2bcZZJoenheE4KtifwgQgaca7AsFveA_qEEPQ_KGUazNwBrW7uZA8WMCTA9NyrFMz0i0W0T3-w2RGGiD30ZT-nmuuyoLO64VN1cXKrIAYcLQo8/w506-h640/IMG.jpg" width="506" /></a></div><br /><p>Buck O'Neil passed away just about the time the first edition of the book was being published. And that was not too long after the special committee that named many Negro League players and pioneers to the Baseball Hall of Fame but failed to include Buck. O'Neil himself would tell you he was a good, not great player. And while he was the first black coach in the majors, he never got a chance to step into the spotlight as the first black manager. </p><p>But you can't possibly read this book and not see what a travesty his exclusion is. Naming an award after him doesn't make up for the lack of a plaque on those walls.</p><p>The book is available for five dollars or less in paper form at various sites. It's probably a $2 download to your Kindle. If you love baseball, or even if you want to feel better about humanity, it's money very, very well spent.<br /></p>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-68365600183060703202020-10-08T21:45:00.001-05:002020-10-09T09:08:10.475-05:00My Five Favorite Pink Cards<p>Collecting Cutch is running a contest to raise money for breast cancer awareness. <a href="https://collectingcutch.blogspot.com/2019/09/cardboard-cameo-girl-next-door-moved-to.html" target="_blank">Here is his intro post</a> with the details. I can't keep up with the parameters due to some projects but I figured I'd contribute one post at least. Hey, I LOVE pink cards, always have. That, and the fact that my sister is just getting over fighting this battle, is why I'm trying to help in some small way. <br /></p><p>The list is restricted to cards I own. I've seen a few nice ones on other blogs over the last few days but I'll just show mine. In no order (except the last one) here they are.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VSW-Lpi8kHg/UPGabxSVT3I/AAAAAAAAGDI/NY5eQLwSCK4/s400/clemente.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="280" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VSW-Lpi8kHg/UPGabxSVT3I/AAAAAAAAGDI/NY5eQLwSCK4/w280-h400/clemente.jpg" width="280" /></a></div><br /><p>'65 Topps Clemente. He had some really nice cards in his time. Who doesn't like the '65 set and it's Clemente, shown with a nice closeup in a pink frame. Seems like airbrushing out the piping would have been even easier that adding a NY logo to the cap. </p><p>This last card is my favorite pink card. I just showed it here last week. They showed up today but I wanted to get this card posted before I dig into those.</p><p>This 1970/71 OPC Gordie Howe All Star is one I've seen a few times and just never got around to bidding on/buying. Then the same Net54 poster that had the Spahn card available had this for sale as well. </p><p>The look on Howe's face is pure 'Gordie Howe'. He looks like he's eyeing the guy who just scored against the Wings and is celebrating a little too much. I'd hate to be that guy. The back of this card is hardly worth scanning, let alone posting. </p><p>It's part of a puzzle (I hate 'puzzle back' subsets) and it shows just a piece of the border and some shadowing. The set had two different puzzles as part of the All Stars, Gordie and Gilbert Perreault of the Sabres. I only got to see him in person at the tail end of his career but it was still a kick to watch him (pun intended).</p><p>Spahn is one of those guys who doesn't seem to have ever had a 'bad' card. OK, maybe the '65 where he's a cap less coach isn't all that attractive, but it's still a '65 of one of the greats. BTW...he won 363 games despite losing three full years while serving in WWII in the U.S. Army in Europe. He was 22 when he entered the service. It's hard to believe he wouldn't have been a 400-game winner had he pitched during those years. But he sacrificed a part of his career as did many Americans, ballplayers and otherwise. <br /></p><p><br /></p>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-29028492569765409312020-10-03T10:47:00.002-05:002020-10-03T10:47:59.568-05:00Gibby<p>Another bit of terrible news. 2020 just keeps getting worse.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Nb0Kqd7ymCyvVI50lsuaFi3YqT7JNk7r100dYuGmBeirPj2nfe54tFmJxdmcXx86VjKIMPN69_iQEjpratxmQw0UX_RXUfrZTeJYTrv8DK4_FbLyOBdHziquFEU3OiSTvAd4hEK8uT0/s353/gibsonblog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="353" data-original-width="243" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Nb0Kqd7ymCyvVI50lsuaFi3YqT7JNk7r100dYuGmBeirPj2nfe54tFmJxdmcXx86VjKIMPN69_iQEjpratxmQw0UX_RXUfrZTeJYTrv8DK4_FbLyOBdHziquFEU3OiSTvAd4hEK8uT0/w275-h400/gibsonblog2.jpg" width="275" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I don't care how bad this card is. I'll never upgrade it. It's been mine since 1959. I love everything about it. Gibby's smile...he's happy to be a ballplayer... the pink frame...I love pink cards...and the fact that I've owned it for over 60 years.</p><p></p><p>My oft re-posted Gibson story:</p><p></p><blockquote>I was fortunate enough to see Gibson pitch and believe me, he was a real
badass on the mound. My favorite memory comes, ironically, from 1975,
his last season and the final time I saw him perform. I attended <a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU197508130.shtml">this game in mid-August</a>
with a friend of mine who happens to be a lifelong Cardinal fan. As
Gibby's career came to an end he struggled through a year that saw him
saddled with a 3-10 record and an ERA over five. But on this day Gibson
came into the game after the Cards had taken a one run lead in the top
of the eleventh. I distinctly recall watching from seats behind the
Cardinal dugout as he stalked out to the mound with that look that few
pitchers had. My friend and I both saw it and said to one another 'Game
over." And it was. Gibby blew away three Astros (looking!!) to wrap up
the game. Awesome.</blockquote><p></p><p>Rest In Peace. One of the greatest ever and the best right-handed pitcher I've ever had the privilege to watch.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhreXVBdQoQO5HmAhQIjpCFXGq1BAiG10JdPm5gZRHzlaeUIi0v3lJubGd3sMlkgG8JxXG-_pIXhtP6L3CtZtmA7yFPjU0SqeGolpdU9QoTL693SCzDXsixeMtlkvV8jIsBpOIcYxB08C0/s400/IMG_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="286" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhreXVBdQoQO5HmAhQIjpCFXGq1BAiG10JdPm5gZRHzlaeUIi0v3lJubGd3sMlkgG8JxXG-_pIXhtP6L3CtZtmA7yFPjU0SqeGolpdU9QoTL693SCzDXsixeMtlkvV8jIsBpOIcYxB08C0/w286-h400/IMG_0001.jpg" width="286" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DFi3wHGsS-8/Vh2eFl5ZYcI/AAAAAAAAX-A/ZF8xrgrzkPI/s400/IMG_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="297" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DFi3wHGsS-8/Vh2eFl5ZYcI/AAAAAAAAX-A/ZF8xrgrzkPI/w298-h400/IMG_0001.jpg" width="298" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lns5h1e-9a0/U31k3wNNObI/AAAAAAAAPKU/heQ0iYFDk7Y/s1600/IMG_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="981" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lns5h1e-9a0/U31k3wNNObI/AAAAAAAAPKU/heQ0iYFDk7Y/w392-h640/IMG_0002.jpg" width="392" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rh_hTocFWrI/U4DVizFDt8I/AAAAAAAAPPQ/aAZjhRqDOrE/s1600/IMG_0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1152" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rh_hTocFWrI/U4DVizFDt8I/AAAAAAAAPPQ/aAZjhRqDOrE/w288-h400/IMG_0004.jpg" width="288" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmCr1h16-77NMcprJ8V2M8UTXwUwHys2eOez-mbUFPBkteGivJmXuvOaUboJdAL2ykyt5WVUBVKAZ-JyaNb4I1d9-sJTrVs6wYAB7NOvKIIZo6QXGCWkEEoOsE5a0oMcluEM7J35eIBoA/s400/IMG_0039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="285" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmCr1h16-77NMcprJ8V2M8UTXwUwHys2eOez-mbUFPBkteGivJmXuvOaUboJdAL2ykyt5WVUBVKAZ-JyaNb4I1d9-sJTrVs6wYAB7NOvKIIZo6QXGCWkEEoOsE5a0oMcluEM7J35eIBoA/w285-h400/IMG_0039.jpg" width="285" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JO0PGP3sGN4/U7MOquK_5VI/AAAAAAAAQLQ/0mdriiqmSU0/s1600/IMG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1150" data-original-width="1600" height="288" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JO0PGP3sGN4/U7MOquK_5VI/AAAAAAAAQLQ/0mdriiqmSU0/w400-h288/IMG.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-5490661177001233482020-09-27T19:22:00.002-05:002020-09-27T19:23:59.089-05:00My Kind Of Town<p>The neighborhood mailwoman delivered a big white envelope last week. It was from Jedi Jeff of <a href="http://www.2x3heroes.com/" target="_blank">2x3 Heroes</a>. Jeff is almost as sporatic as I am when it comes to posting lately but at least he's had an excuse...he's a grandfather again!. (I'm jealous..my kids and their spouses only add pets to their households). </p><p>Jeff's gift was Chicaco and Baltimore-centric. It led off this this gem: <br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia2iXSRlJrmy3cS8fSdh8TPmyndMfQe2ZXC6ZNaXfB5m6v2f-0CsWq536wNIuqNLKyyVDJt9YTqcPABdpcqZ0vmkmUujyP1_vDkIZhpNgpcZjcWRyUzPmBkK3dYRufLvpTFzKd_deQZfI/s2048/IMG_0001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1643" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia2iXSRlJrmy3cS8fSdh8TPmyndMfQe2ZXC6ZNaXfB5m6v2f-0CsWq536wNIuqNLKyyVDJt9YTqcPABdpcqZ0vmkmUujyP1_vDkIZhpNgpcZjcWRyUzPmBkK3dYRufLvpTFzKd_deQZfI/w514-h640/IMG_0001.jpg" width="514" /></a></div><p>That 8x10 beauty immediately earned a place above my desk. I just saw the headline announcing the death of Gale Sayers. He was 77.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPieXIU1AcvMon7TNMRyp4caIBIwdtFsjjaRTsBkcdaldcA2b6HE1S4IQrb4ciZwYeLrJDAxcLelkfGL2R3idoOkm_357k8M9JW34ua8jZufx-4SH9BuYP-HRWfLrebQcDxxUzMip7uL0/s400/IMG_0008.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="255" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPieXIU1AcvMon7TNMRyp4caIBIwdtFsjjaRTsBkcdaldcA2b6HE1S4IQrb4ciZwYeLrJDAxcLelkfGL2R3idoOkm_357k8M9JW34ua8jZufx-4SH9BuYP-HRWfLrebQcDxxUzMip7uL0/w255-h400/IMG_0008.jpg" width="255" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I've been a football fan for as long as I can remember. Sayers, as I have droned on about many times here, was as dynamic a player as I've ever seen. For pure jaw-dropping ability he ranks up there with Jim Brown, Lenny Moore and Barry Sanders. His career reminds me of that of Sandy Koufax. He wasn't around long, but while he was, he was dazzling.</p><p>I'll re-post some of the Sayers items I've shown here before. And finish off with a video or two of his highlights. First, one of the best cards I own. His Philly Gum RC from 1966.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7VLu8bHES7Rp1Tx0orbwVJNf4RGvOy9LoUdYmuoGqs419LNd4y66EEyr8rwWu6Q1KsjsuExKIL59fk4Q-j51V8QZ51nrwOV2TsLmlj_awWXlFSTgYt8LVK1pTvAd8lzkjz45m_nFV1Kc/s400/IMG_0006.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="282" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7VLu8bHES7Rp1Tx0orbwVJNf4RGvOy9LoUdYmuoGqs419LNd4y66EEyr8rwWu6Q1KsjsuExKIL59fk4Q-j51V8QZ51nrwOV2TsLmlj_awWXlFSTgYt8LVK1pTvAd8lzkjz45m_nFV1Kc/w283-h400/IMG_0006.jpg" width="283" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKS5JiPQi3kbYjTUN9EiwZaveJfGksftKto7nc2SCkRP4RMvgHon1299joADHvAIlgFD37kH_ZlpHPKBs_VX8tojR7VEVfi24afaa70eUH3MJVKgA4w61SPEdjEhTZh0P-JJko-jD5eCU/s1815/IMG_6284.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1815" data-original-width="1055" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKS5JiPQi3kbYjTUN9EiwZaveJfGksftKto7nc2SCkRP4RMvgHon1299joADHvAIlgFD37kH_ZlpHPKBs_VX8tojR7VEVfi24afaa70eUH3MJVKgA4w61SPEdjEhTZh0P-JJko-jD5eCU/w372-h640/IMG_6284.jpg" width="372" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpFXTs1UPz2lhvD0SY3QvCFICSSfDcO87InPVCH2ssblAmSW1iDxr48i7k3dZl29LCSvXJKYXIWdtAEJcX_9D1Jod0s_rNc_OG9gWuJC8NBdCNSy0PKAyIepOddoBMuda-bJKbrqlrzcY/s640/IMG_0001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="385" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpFXTs1UPz2lhvD0SY3QvCFICSSfDcO87InPVCH2ssblAmSW1iDxr48i7k3dZl29LCSvXJKYXIWdtAEJcX_9D1Jod0s_rNc_OG9gWuJC8NBdCNSy0PKAyIepOddoBMuda-bJKbrqlrzcY/w384-h640/IMG_0001.jpg" width="384" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VpajenLXpo8/VprbSVb3EzI/AAAAAAAAZBg/M-tfqxk6tSM/s400/IMG_0004.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="282" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VpajenLXpo8/VprbSVb3EzI/AAAAAAAAZBg/M-tfqxk6tSM/w283-h400/IMG_0004.jpg" width="283" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy_Xo8UB9Yqj6RV1WqTEgb94vzWq3Il_no13vB_BXqsQvfmoLq05NWGMDPtgeaG3VWubobZPAHlWrrTsGs4Roy1uEda73hIltyeeqmX9-fWHfOScpkeUMENawi-sdKOoQWbz0qJrK1CTs/s400/IMG_0004.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="284" data-original-width="400" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy_Xo8UB9Yqj6RV1WqTEgb94vzWq3Il_no13vB_BXqsQvfmoLq05NWGMDPtgeaG3VWubobZPAHlWrrTsGs4Roy1uEda73hIltyeeqmX9-fWHfOScpkeUMENawi-sdKOoQWbz0qJrK1CTs/w400-h284/IMG_0004.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a4YUGt2abHI/UhvU36vC-fI/AAAAAAAALLE/iWtHmcZMT7w/s400/IMG_0020.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="287" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a4YUGt2abHI/UhvU36vC-fI/AAAAAAAALLE/iWtHmcZMT7w/w286-h400/IMG_0020.jpg" width="286" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLRonSKGvD1wC7MOKic-3aQfioZtTIaQcUiGdqIkaZAc3qhDTEsHo50tnCY-Hjc1Et0IxFPikD38zO1wDl0Ts31Vl9n6POiig9Of9PvZwjBtuwXcUpURpNwTFjRM8I1GpmSTCLsMAsxmZz/s1600/IMG_0001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1131" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLRonSKGvD1wC7MOKic-3aQfioZtTIaQcUiGdqIkaZAc3qhDTEsHo50tnCY-Hjc1Et0IxFPikD38zO1wDl0Ts31Vl9n6POiig9Of9PvZwjBtuwXcUpURpNwTFjRM8I1GpmSTCLsMAsxmZz/w452-h640/IMG_0001.jpg" width="452" /></a></div><br /><p>Trust me whan I tell ya this video is worth the time.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MIpgdo9Ab38" width="320" youtube-src-id="MIpgdo9Ab38"></iframe></div><br />Commishbobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.com3
