With my grandparents (and parents) gone I am trying to get as much info as I can on their stories and wishing I had thought to ask more when they were around. I recently found records from Ellis Island showing some interesting things on my fathers side. And I came across a whole box of photos from their first years here and as a young family.

We'd planned a trip to Portugal and Italy for last summer but life got in the way. Maybe soon.Commishbobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18069472376708715755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3550073840562722051.post-52911955901710234702013-04-23T07:58:10.977-05:002013-04-23T07:58:10.977-05:00Great story. They were discovered by us just like Madeira so long ago...they are Portugal even if they have regional governments. But those respond under the national government just like the other regional governments in mainland.

Many people from Açores went looking for better life in the US and Canada. Almost every Portuguese have family in the other side of the ocean.

The first card you post has our monarchic flag. It has the monarchs colours, blue and white and our country's arms. But since October 5 1910 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5_October_1910_revolution) that we live in a Republic so our flag changed a bit...now we have two different colours, red and green. But we kept the arms.
I confess to you that I liked the monarchic flag better ;)

About the lady in the other card. By the picture it seems a woman from the Minho region (http://etnografiaemimagens.blogspot.pt/2011/02/trajo-do-minho-mulher-dos-arredores-de.html). But maybe ot is your grand-grandmother that went from Minho to Açores ;)

About cursing in Portuguese eheh that is always the first thing you ever learn in foreign languages.

Good to hear talking about my country from the other side of the Atlantic. Hope you come to Portugal one day =)Ana Luhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03920996724958583647noreply@blogger.com
